The Four Stages of Becoming

Growth isn't a switch. It's a sequence.

No one goes from new to seasoned in a leap. They move through stages — and knowing which stage you're in changes everything about what you need.

Four stages, one direction

We name four.

Initiating. You're learning the moves. Everything takes thought; nothing is automatic yet. The work is showing up before it feels natural.

Responding. The rhythm starts to answer back. You've lived enough weeks that the practice feels less foreign. You're building consistency, and the identity is beginning to take.

Owning. The rhythm is yours now. You don't need to be told. You Prepare because you're someone who prepares, not because it's assigned. The behavior has become the person.

Leading. You've become someone others become around. Your steadiness is contagious. You're not just living the rhythm — you're a reason someone else keeps living theirs.

Why the stage matters

The industry coaches everyone the same way, and it fails most of them.

An Initiating advisor treated like they should already Own it hears only their gaps. An Owning advisor still coached like a beginner feels managed, not trusted — and quietly disengages.

Coach the stage the person is actually in. Celebrate the move from one to the next as the real progress it is. The stage isn't a ranking of worth. It's a map of where the next step is.

The destination is the same

Every advisor, at every stage, is becoming.

Initiating to Leading isn't a ladder of value. It's the arc of a person growing into who they decided to be.

Wherever you are on it — you're on it.

That's what matters.
